Welcome to the Endangered Species Web Site
for Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo Counties

This web site was prepared by the Central Coast Water Authority and the County of San Luis Obispo under the auspices of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the National Marine Fisheries Service, and the California Department of Fish and Game. The purpose of the site is to provide the development community of the Central Coast with information to encourage compliance with both the California and Federal Endangered Species Acts. In addition to providing brief overviews of both of these laws, the site includes a list of standard endangered species mitigation concepts, lists of threatened and endangered species in both Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo Counties, and species profiles for 40 plant and animal species. The species profiles are intended to be printed and used in the field to train construction crews, utility workers, and other individuals about their responsibilities under the California and Federal Endangered Species Acts.

While this web site focuses on species that are protected by the California and Federal Endangered Species Acts, project proponents should be aware that the environmental review process for all projects aims to protect habitat for all species. Please note that the information on this site was developed in May 1998 and was believed to be current and accurate at that time. Listed species change from time to time and the species listed here may not represent a current comprehensive list of all protected species. Project proponents and agencies that approve projects are encouraged to contact the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Ventura Field Office at (805) 644-1766, the National Marine Fisheries Service Long Beach Office at (562) 980-4020, and the California Department of Fish and Game’s Santa Barbara Office at (805) 964-8849 for information about listed, proposed, and sensitive species in your project area and for further guidance on endangered species compliance. Project proponents are also encouraged to contact their local permitting agency (city or county) before performing any mitigation activities.
